The steering helm in a hydraulic steering system connects to the steering wheel via a shaft which uses the rotary movement of the wheel to direct hydraulic fluid down the hose lines to the steering ram. The ram is then moved by this fluid to make the desired steering adjustments. It is important to match up your helm to the steering ram to ensure they will work well together as a smaller helm used with a larger ram will increase the number of wheel turns between port and starboard.
