Requests for Thornycroft spares should always be accompanied by the engine number / build list. The Thornycroft 380 is a 6 cylinder, 4 stroke, vertical, inline 6.232L diesel engine, based on the Ford 2715E Dorset industrial engine. The reliability and performance of the Ford based Thornycroft 380 made it one of the most popular 6 cylinder power units ever produced. Extremely popular with inshore fishing vessels, both single and twin engine installations proved a popular choice for commercial operators and pleasure owners. The 380 was produced in both Heat Exchanger and Keel Cooled configuration. From the MS-05-380 Thornycroft leaflet, ratings are as follows: 1250RPM 60BHP 12.91LPH, 1500RPM 72BHP 15.27LPH, 1750RPM 83BHP 17.64LPH, 2000RPM 93BHP 20.04LPH, 2250RPM 102BHP 22.50LPH, 2500RPM 108BHP 24.68LPH. Intermittent rating is shown as 120BHP. Thornycroft always used a separate manifold and heat exchanger on their engines. The early 380 engines used a cast iron unit made in house by Thornycroft. Later engines used the aluminium round Bowman unit. Both units can be replaced by the latest combined heat exchanger manifold unit. Eventually the 380 was replaced by the Thornycroft 381, an uprated and modified version of the same engine.
