Following the successful MD1 Volvo Penta marine engines came the Volvo MD5 series of engines. The first of these was the Volvo Penta MD5A marine diesel engine. The Volvo MD5A was a single cylinder, marinised diesel engine, generally rated 7.5hp @ 2500rpm. The 443cc Volvo Penta MD5A engines were produced between 1975 and 1981 and usually mated to a Volvo MS gearbox or Volvo Saildrive. Many of the engine spares and service parts for the Volvo MD5A remained constant throughout production and continued onto the Volvo MD5B and MD5C engines.
